USA Jekyll Island - GeorgiaKnown as Georgia’s Jewel, Jekyll Island was colonised by the English in 1735, fell into private French hands, then just before the advent of the 20th century it became the vacation playground for the USA’s rich industrialists who founded their “club” which opened in 1888. The likes of J P Morgan, Joseph Pulitzer, Marshall Field & William K Vanderbilt all had their “cottages” built around the Jekyll Island Club. Historically, the club was the scene of the very first trans continental phone call when,on Jan 25 1915, A. T. & T president, Theodore Vail (also one of the “ club” members) placed the call. They also created their own golf course on the island, which now boasts three 18 holes courses and a 9 hole course. The Island’s unspoilt beauty still remains with abundant wildlife and scenic beaches, where, during the summer months, loggerhead sea turtles swim ashore to nest and lay their eggs in the sand. The island has become a sanctuary for this endangered species.
